Apply for the Board

Board Member Application

Board Members are an essential part of The Light KC.  Here’s what’s expected.
What is a Board Member?
Serving on the Church Board is not a casual group.  It is a highly committed association of dedicated Christians; these are men and women who have resolved to give their all for Christ and the church.

Requirements:
All Board Members should be able qualify for church leadership according to the precepts set forth in the books of 1 Timothy and Titus. The Board has two primary responsibilities. First, they are governors of the church, meaning they set the parameters for what is and is not acceptable as a church body. Their job is to define the governing principles, or a set of values that show how we live out the mission of making disciples. Second, the Board holds the Lead Pastor accountable.
Because of these important roles, the biblical texts regarding leadership, and our particular vision at The Light KC, we see several important requirements to be a Board Member.
  • Strong moral character.  While we never expect anyone to be perfect (none of us are!), it is expected that a Board Member be endlessly pursuing a closer walk with God.
  • Maintain a personal time of prayer and Bible study.
  • Practice mature management of interpersonal conflict and dissent.  Conflict must be dealt with in the manner described in Matthew 18:15-17.
  • Attend and contribute to the groups at The Light KC.
  • Demonstrate a consistent willingness to build relationships with others; this includes both inside and outside the church.
  • Provide regular financial giving to the church.
  • Serve in a defined service area or leadership role.
  • Be willing to undergo a background check, may be inter viewed by the Board Chair, and submit to a Church vote.
  • Avoid discrediting behavior.
  • Have the application endorsed by a current Board Member, a Staff Member, and a Church Member.

Supporting the Vision:
The Light KC exists to fulfill the great commission of Jesus Christ to make disciples. To be a Board Member, it is important that you can actively support this vision.

Becoming a Board Member:
To become a Board Member, fill out this application.  It is important that you read and understand what is expected.  It is also important that a current Board Member, a Staff Member, and a Church Member support the application.  The Board Chair will make sure the application is complete, will contact you for any additional information, and will prepare applicants for a church membership vote.

Working as a Board Member:
Board Members perform several important functions at The Light KC.  Some of the most important are as follows:
  • Help with “board-level” or executive decisions that help decide the direction of The Light KC.
  • Recruit and help others get involved in service.
  • Lead or volunteer in a particular area of service in the church that needs to be coordinated.
  • Assist other leaders to complete much of the work at The Light KC.  This includes supporting other leaders with various projects and efforts.
  • Attend monthly board meetings.
